Cleopatra and Caesar, ca. 1680-1700 Fan leaf, painted in gouache, completed for an oval. At the gate of a palace bordered by the sea, a retinue accompanies a lady of quality protected by an umbrella, and preceded by a child. A soldier descends from a rich ship to meet her, presented by a man in a turban. On a cloud above them Cupid shoots an arrow under the gaze of Venus and two doves. It could be the meeting of Cleopatra, preceded by Caesarion, and Caesar. D. 47 cm In a wooden frame with gilded rod. 18th century 49,5 cm x 59 cm N.B.: this sheet was exhibited at the Fan Museum in London in 2003-2004. Read Pamela Cowen, "A fanfare for the Sun King.
