Important labradorite cameo representing a bearded warrior w - Lot 166
Important labradorite cameo representing a bearded warrior with long curly hair, his helmet illustrating in relief a fight between a Lapithe and a centaur, he is wearing a cape held on the shoulder by a fibula, in profile turned to the left. The bust is inspired by marble groups from Rome and Florence, replicas of the 3rd century Greek original, Ajax or Menelaus carrying the body of Patroclus (H.: 10 cm). The cameo on a pedestal resting on a rectangular base decorated with a second cameo depicting a bust in profile of a Ptolemaic queen wearing a vulture's wig. The queen, with a slightly arched nose, is turned to the right, adorned with a large pectoral. Such representations are characteristic of productions from the first century BC depicting the idealized portraits of Cleopatra VII. (Small restoration on the base) 19th century work. Height: 30.5 cm. An identical cameo without a base was included in the sale of the Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé collection. 23 - 25 February 2009. Christie's
