Rare poly-lobed quartz snuffbox, the two-tone setting in gol - Lot 103
Rare poly-lobed quartz snuffbox, the two-tone setting in gold 585°° and silver 800°°° chiseled with foliage, roses proper and a dog playing with a ball. The stepped lid is carved with an elongated pug, looking behind him, eyes encrusted with brilliants, the collar with a knot in 585°° gold. German work, probably Dresden, circa 1760. Slightly missing from the dog's ears. L.: 5.7 cm. The city of Dresden seems to have become a speciality of these snuffboxes carved in quartz or blood jasper with zoomorphic figures, with a predominance of the pug. The creation of the Order of Mopses in 1738, a Masonic lodge that accepted women into its ranks, resulted in recurrent quotations of the Pug in the decorative arts, such as the Meissen porcelain group known as "the lady with pugs". (Petit Palais, Musée des Beaux-arts de la Ville de Paris).
