Pio Ignazio CAMPANA (Turin, 1744 - Paris, 1786). Presumed portrait of the Princess of Taranto, Duchess de la Trémoille (1763-1814), born Louise-Emmanuelle de Châtillon. Miniature on ivory on a blond tortoiseshell box from the 18th century. Provenance: - Old Bulgari collection in Rome no. 1790 (its label inside) acquired from Ouaiss at the Louvre des Antiquaires in 2001. According to a note from the collector this box was the subject of an expert appraisal by Leo Schidlof dated Paris 1948. A vue diam. 6,7 cm box diam. 8,3 cm Gross weight: 77,8 gr. Campana was the miniature painter of Queen Marie-Antoinette, whose Princess of Taranto was one of the fifteen ladies in waiting. We compare this miniature to a reduced, oval and bust version of the Princess of Taranto by Campana, identified on a box to the right of the portrait of her sister the Duchess of Uzès (in the catalogue of Galerie Jaegy-Théoleyre).
