Portrait of the Marquise d'Orvilliers (1772-1862), leaning against a background of columns and landscape Miniature on ivory from the early 19th century on the lid of a box in a composition imitating blood jasper, inside lined with speckled scales. Trace of signature or inscription at the bottom of the column, illegible. Jeanne Robertine Rilliet, Marquise d'Orvilliers, daughter of a Geneva banker, had rented her hotel on rue St Claude in Paris to Cagliostro, who turned it into a magic cabinet. This miniature is inspired by Louis David's painting dated 1790 (Louvre RF 2418) and transposes it into a landscape. A vue diam. 6,8 cm box diam. 7,8 cm. Gross weight: 85, 1gr. Provenance: acquired from Marie Maxime at the Louvre des Antiquaires in 2001. Restoration of two early cracks on the right.
