Pham Hau (1903-1995) - Lot 69
Pham Hau (1903-1995)
Tonkin pagoda.
Polychrome and gold paint on lacquered wood panel. Signed with the artist's seal in the lower right corner. 1939.
60 x110 cm.
Excellent condition in one piece. Although the place is not named directly by the artist, it undoubtedly evokes the Tay Phuong pagoda (or Master's pagoda), a historic architectural ensemble located some thirty kilometres southwest of Hanoi. An interpretation integrating all the pictorial elements characteristic of Pham Hau's universe.
Born in Ha Dong province, Pham Hau is a former employee of the Hanoi railway station, married in 1923, then a student at the Ecole Supérieure des Beaux Arts de l'Indochine in 1929. He graduated in 1934. From then on, he became an independent artist, quickly very much in demand by all the great Vietnamese families or colonial administrators. His very meticulous work, his subtle chromatic palette and his personal themes have made Pham Hau one of the greatest master lacquer artists in Vietnam. His style is a permanent bridge between the ancestral tradition of lacquer art and the pictorial modernity of the 20th century. He has always been a fierce guardian of Vietnamese artistic traditions. He is one of the founders of the National School of Handicrafts, the ancestor of today's University of Industrial Fine Arts in Vietnam.
Provenance: Son of the former director of the Hanoi Vocational School and owner of a trading post between 1925 and 1945. His name will be communicated to the buyer. These works were purchased by the family directly from the artist in 1939 or 1940, during an annual exhibition organized by the Indochina School of Fine Arts. After 1945 the family returned to France for good. This work has remained in Paris since 1946
