Chalice veil, Louis XIII period, green silk satin embroidere - Lot 305
Chalice veil, Louis XIII period, green silk satin embroidered in gold and silver thread, blade, cannetille and sequins in couchure and guipure, with the IHS numeral surmounting a heart pierced with the three Passion nails inscribed on a radiating cross with four bouquets forming the arms. In the two lower corners the interlaced monograms CC and MM are probably those of the high-ranking sponsors of the sumptuous liturgical ensemble to which this edged chalice veil belongs, 46 x 46 cm. The monogram with the two M's, although not surmounted by a crown, is similar to that of Marie de Medici on an embroidered binding kept at the Musée Condé in Chantilly. The two intertwined Cs could form the monogram of Chrestienne de France, sometimes also called Christine, born in Paris on 10 February 1606 and died 27 December 1663, third child of Henri IV and Marie de Medici. Bible: Books in embroidery, French bookbindings from the Middle Ages to the present day, Paris, Bibliothèque nationale de France/DMC, 1995, pp. 64-65, no. 25.
