Theatre, circa 1780-1790 Folded fan, leather sheet mounted in English and painted with gouache. In the centre, a couple sits under a canopy decorated with crescents of the moon, and converse by pointing to two women on the left while two men listen to them on the right. On each side, cartels with symbols of love and fidelity: burning hearts on an altar, doves and a dog. On the reverse, a love altar with two hearts burning, an ivory* frame pierced and engraved with flowers enhanced with tawdry colours. The plumes carved with lightning flashes and the letter "M".H.t. 27.2 cm/ H.f. 12.1 cm NB: a similar leaf is identified as probably Mozart's "L'enlèvement au sérail", in S. Mayor, "The Letts guide to collecting fans", 1990, p. 26-27.
