LE PRINCE Jean-Baptiste (1734-1781). - Lot 243
LE PRINCE Jean-Baptiste (1734-1781). Polish Janissary Officer. Aquatint on paper, preserved in an antique carved and gilded wood frame. Minor foxing, accidents to the frame. Sight: H.: 17 cm - W.: 13 cm. Frame: H.: 23.5 cm - W.: 20 cm History: Jean-Baptiste Le Prince is considered the first artist (in 1768) to have introduced aquatint into his engraved and etched plates. He may even be the inventor of aquatint, an engraving technique that enables the reproduction of a wide range of tones. "L'officier des Janissaires Polonais" is one of his finest engravings. It was created in Russia and depicts a warrior who was originally part of the Turkish infantry under the Ottoman Empire from the 15th to the 19th century.
