GOTHIC SERVICE FOR THE WINTER PALACE. - Lot 178
GOTHIC SERVICE FOR THE WINTER PALACE. Imperial Manufactory, St. Petersburg, Nicholas I period. Oval-shaped hard-paste porcelain gravy-boat stand with central decoration of a polychrome rosette, surrounded by a wide frieze of polychrome neo-Gothic motifs on a blue background, surrounded by a gold border. Age wear, missing gilding. Blue marks on reverse: HI (Nicolas I) under imperial crown. L.: 27.5 cm - W.: 19 cm. History: this service, designed for 150 people, was commissioned by the Department of the Imperial Household for the Winter Palace and presented to Emperor Nicholas I as a Christmas gift in 1833. It was decorated in the neo-Gothic style widely used in architecture and the applied arts in the 1830s. The service's decoration is based on medieval decorative motifs typical of stained glass. The service was received into the Winter Palace storerooms on December 24, 1832. At the end of the 19th century, the service was enlarged to serve 200 people, and was added to several times during previous reigns. The service was often used for imperial festivities and ceremonial banquets until the early 20th century, such as the famous ball held at the Winter Palace in February 1903.
