"PILLEMENT" vest, cotton, decorated with open cages and gree - Lot 110
"PILLEMENT" vest, cotton, decorated with open cages and green chinoiseries, ivory back, lining missing. Size M. History of the vest "Pillement" Painter to King Stanislas of Poland, long welcomed at the Viennese court, highly appreciated in England and Portugal, he obtained the title of painter to Queen Marie-Antoinette on his return to Paris. Famous for his Chinese-style woodwork decorations, his works have been engraved all over the world. He published albums of "Fleurs inventées" (invented flowers), which served as inspiration for many artists of his time. In 1767, he composed a collection of some 200 original drawings. This canvas, which was engraved some 20 years later, features no fewer than 80 of these motifs, all with amusing detail. Among them is a dodo, a massive, flightless bird from Mauritius that has become mythical since it was exterminated by sailors in the 18th century."
