CHAPELLE DES TUILERIES. - Lot 392
CHAPELLE DES TUILERIES. Fragment of an altar frontal, in carved white marble, decorated with arches ending in floral motifs. French work from the 19th century. Good condition. H. 10.5 cm - L. 58 cm. Provenance: Monseigneur François-Marie Tregaro (1824-1897). Former collection of Maréchal Edmond Le Boeuf (1809-1888). Acquired by the current owner from his descendants. History: After the defeat of 1870, Marshal Edmond Le Boeuf, appointed Minister of War by Napoleon III on August 21, 1869, retired to his Château du Moncel in Bailleul, Orne. He had decorated his office with a wealth of memorabilia relating to the reign of Louis XVI, his grandfather Nicolas Le Boeuf having cared for the young Louis XVII in the Temple. His collection was noticed by all visitors. After the Tuileries Palace burned down on May 23-26, 1871, Mgr François-Marie Trégaro, former chief chaplain to the Imperial Navy (1868-1871) and bishop of Sées (1882-1897), was presented with a number of relics extracted from the ruins, no doubt by one of the chaplains. The first is a piece of the side altar of the Tuileries chapel, and the other a handle from the sacristy door. Trégaro and Le Boeuf were close friends and lived in the same region, which is how this historic piece came into Marshal Le Boeuf's collection.
