DIRECTOIRE GILET, in cotton with light yellow crescent patte - Lot 93
DIRECTOIRE GILET, in cotton with light yellow crescent pattern on an orange-yellow background, dotted with green polka dots, orange back and ivory lining. Size M.
History of the Directoire vest
The aftermath of the French Revolution was synonymous with social upheaval, and artistic creation, affected by France's economic and financial crisis, naturally slowed down. It was under the Directoire, a very short period of 4 years (1795-1799), that craftsmen managed to produce new creations, often more modest and sober than those that marked the end of royalty, but not without purity and inventiveness. The Directoire vest is cut individually from a young, rhythmic fabric, whose crescent pattern reflects the very "drum major" tone of the Directoire era. The composition is surprising in its rhythm and rigorous repetition of motifs, but also in the calm and softness of the stitch that illuminates the diamond intersection. The first glimmers of a new art form under the executive power instituted by the Directoire Constitution of Year III.
