Louis VIDAL (1754 - mort après 1805) - Lot 399
Louis VIDAL (1754 - mort après 1805) Study of a bouquet of flowers with roses, campanulas and pelargonium Watercolor and gouache highlights on beige paper 41.2 x 30.2 cm Signed on a leaf on the right L.V The works of Louis Vidal, flower painter par excellence, evoke his refined upbringing and years of assiduous study, enabling him to render each floral species with great precision. The clarity of the whole is revealed by careful work on the effects of light and transparency, particularly in the representation of the slightest veining of the leaves. The taste for botany, initiated by the role of the Jardin royal des plantes founded in 1635, then by the Académie royale des sciences created in 1666, continued in the 18th century with precise studies of flora in the form of drawings, engravings and gouache watercolors on paper and vellum. Probably active in Lille, Vidal followed in the Nordic tradition of painters such as Rachel Ruysch (1664-1750) and Jan van Os (1744-1808). The Musée des Beaux-Arts de Lille also holds one of his still lifes on panel (inv. P445).
