Esprit Directoire, Europe, circa 1880 Ladies' perfecting umbrella with springless opening. Black cotton and silk cover with selvedge. Bamboo shaft, ivory handle with bramble effect, and pommel forming a hook with a shield. An ivory earth scraper. Bucket casting bearing the mark of the famous Parisian firm "Charageat". Total length 85 cm Eight steel ribs, 56 cm Weight 418 gr (good condition) SYSTEMS, CURIOSITIES AND IMPROVEMENTS N. In his 1854 "Rapport sur les objets de parure de l'Exposition universelle de Londres", Rondot tells us that 103 patents for inventions and improvements were issued between 1808 and 1851 for parasols and umbrellas. "At the head of the manufacturers who have raised the industrial importance of parasols and umbrellas to a great height is M. Cazal, of Paris, supplier to H.M. the Empress of the French. Since 1835, this manufacturer has taken out an infinite number of patents, all with the aim of simplifying and perfecting the umbrella mechanism, extending its use and applications, and adding exquisite elegance to its shape".
