Lyre bird needle lace, Maison Lefébure, early 20th century. - Lot 416
Lyre bird needle lace, Maison Lefébure, early 20th century. Circular in shape, with a superb Art Nouveau design, of a lyrebird with sumptuous curved feathers, well defined by embroidery in relief, some feathers lightened by fashions held in place with horsehair. The bird is perched on a branch from which large, supple, airy leaves rise in elegant contrast to the feather work, the motifs linked by very fine picoté bridles. Cream-colored cotton, horsehair partially present on the border picots. Diameter 20 cm (very good condition) The Musée des Beaux-Arts et de la Dentelle d'Alençon owns a collection of drawings by the Lefébure workshop, one page of which shows the design for this lace. The Musée Baron Gérard de Bagneux holds a copy of this lace design. Provenance sale on October 3, 1989, Lefébure collection, Ionesco study in Neuilly-sur-Seine.
