Exceptional Art Nouveau lace collar, needlework, Vienna, cir - Lot 408
Exceptional Art Nouveau lace collar, needlework, Vienna, circa 1900. Remarkably fine workmanship, with a design well representative of the short-lived Art Nouveau lace production then in vogue in Vienna, and particularly rare to find today. Delicate, perfectly symmetrical decoration, with umbellifers on their stalks and supple foliage, the umbels executed in very tight, finely worked festoon stitch, each of the tiny florets adorned with a needlepoint fashion; motifs linked by a fine network of very small needlepoint gauze stitches. Dim. laid flat Height: 47 cm Width: 40 cm (good condition, rare very small holes or fine repeats in the network, one small stain) This lace is similar to a drawing illustrated in the portfolio "DENTELLE DE VIENNE" by J.HRDLICKA, professor at the Vienna School of Decorative Arts, number 166 of this sale. An identical model is on deposit at the Museum for Kunst und Gewerbe, Hamburg, inv. 1902.235 Cf. "Lace a History" Mme Santina M. Levey, Fig.493
