Superb "Point de Rose" needlepoint gauze shawl, Belgium, last quarter of the 19th century. Triangular shape in needlepoint lace, well-balanced decoration in free symmetry built up from the center: bouquet of large roses in full bloom with rows of detached petals and beaded hearts, 56 roses in all, foliage and buds, supported by a river of scalloped cartouches and medallions adorned with varied fashions, garlands of leaflets, buds and leaves, the borders scalloped with supple cartouches, leaves and large roses with detached petals, the motifs linked by the Point de Gaze network, dark ivory-colored cotton. Dim. 2.40 m x 89 cm (good condition, with one small, fine repeat and a few very small holes in the network). Cf. "Lace a History" Mme Santina M. Levey, Fig.461
