Rare Chantilly bobbin lace train skirt, Bayeux, circa 1880. - Lot 317
Rare Chantilly bobbin lace train skirt, Bayeux, circa 1880. Top skirt with long train in grenadine silk for a ball gown, decorated with a rich arrangement of a multitude of flowers au naturel, some worked in ombré. On the front, a spray of roses, peonies, anemones, daisies, foliage and their buds, with elegant rinceaux of large roses worked in ombré on either side and above; graceful knotted ribbons holding a spray of flowers on either side. At the back, large, supple sprays of blooming roses and large irises, daffodils and disheveled tulips, centaureas, daisies and umbellifers, in the midst of their foliage. The lower edge of the skirt is adorned with a wide, laid-out frieze, masterfully echoing the ornamental register of the entire skirt. Dim. height front: 105 cm, length back from waist to bottom: 175 cm, circumference at bottom: 3.85 m, width at waist: 150 cm (very good condition, discreet 5 cm restoration at waist on front of skirt). The sumptuousness and richness of the design, as well as the exceptional finesse and quality of execution of this ombré chantilly lace, indicate its provenance from a very large workshop such as the Lefébure factory, either commissioned by a very high-ranking aristocratic family or produced as a centerpiece for a world's fair.
