Christ in fruitwood carved in the round. Head raised, girded - Lot 114
Christ in fruitwood carved in the round. Head raised, girded with a braided crown of thorns resting on wavy hair falling on the shoulders, mouth open, perizonium tied with fall on the left hip, legs bent; the back is very naturalistic with prominent muscles; small vein networks on the arms. Germany, Bavaria, entourage of David Heschler (Memmingen, 1611 - Ulm, 1667), first half of the 17th century H. 47 cm (small missing left foot and hands) Base David Heschler was born in 1611 in Bavaria. Strongly inspired by the work of Georg Petel, he took a different position in his way of sculpting. It is difficult to fully attribute this Christ to David Heschler, but it is possible to compare it with a Christ from the Blumka-Bölher collection, which is presented as being attributed to Georg Petel (fig). The locks of the beard, but above all the back with its very knotty and particularly prominent musculature, accentuate the tension of the crucified body. The hair, however, has some differences, notably in the crown of sun-shaped locks at the top of the skull. This "signature" could therefore point to one of the disciples of this great sculptor, as was David Heschler.
