Virgil Solis is one of the most prolific German engravers of the 16th century. He was active in Nuremberg from 1539 until his death in 1562. Several of our drawings are related to the series of 218 woodcuts, published in 1565 in Nuremberg, on the Old and New Testament. And one of the drawings is related to the series of 50 woodcuts, published in 1552 in Nuremberg, on the Passion of Christ.
Solis engraved either after his own invention or after drawings or engravings by other artists, as our drawing from the Durer engraving shows.
