[MARITIME TRADE - Mediterranean]. Set of documents related to the trade of exotic goods and products in Marseille, in the 18th century, from the Roux Company, famous merchants and bankers of the Phocaean city. Very interesting source of information on the trade of rare commodities in the 18th century, by the powerful Roux Company, active between 1728 and 1843. One finds there the details of the trade of spices, colors, food, textiles, plants and animal species: Campêche wood, indigo, cocoa, turpentine, tar, alum, rhubarb, escamonée, black galls, Alisary root, gum adragant, cinnamon, anise, cumin, pepper, clove, ginger, madder, vermilion, ceruse, cochineal, azure), minerals (litharge, Venetian steel, bright silver, iron, wads and bars, copper, pistachio, currant, coffee, licorice, cocoa, oil, rice, pepper, wool, silk, spun cottons, sarsaparilla, campeck wood, sperm whale sperm, sandalwood and countless other riches, coming from Agde (Occitania), Yarmouth (Scotland), Venice, Rotterdam, Salonica, Bayonne, Chania in Greece, Malta, Smyrna, Algiers, Genoa, Stockholm, London, Seyde (Sidon in Lebanon), Martinique, Livorno in Tuscany, etc. Through various ships, corvette (light and fast warship), brigantine (large sailing ship), senau (two-masted ship), Tartanes (small Mediterranean ship used formerly for fishing and coastal navigation), etc., with the names of the captains and the ships: "La Gardienne", "le Jupitée Retrouvé", "L'Antignane", etc. There are, for example: - Two account books of the Roux Company entitled "Pour Messieurs Roux et Compagnie", [Marseille], October 1736 and October 1738. 17 pp. in-8 very narrow. "Vessel of Captains Reynders & Bremond from Amsterdam & Cadiz on September 17, 1736," etc. - Table of accounts of an order for sulfur loaded in three vessels in 1737. "Invoice for one hundred and eighty-five cases of sulfur in cannon loaded by Baptiste-Honoré Roux & Co. namely cases n°28 to 77 on the vessel the fort captain du Rocher [...] 53 cases n°78 to 130 on the vessel the fort captain Joseph Chapelle at the consignment of Monsieur Le Couteulx & Cie of Rouen and 82 cases n°131 to 212 on the vessel "L'Aventurier" captain Leporche at the consignment of Monsieur Lafontain de Bonhomme of St Malo [...]". - A letter from Captain Le Rochet Morel attesting to the good reception of a case before departure, by the Roux Company. - 15 receipts of transport of various goods. Large in-4 oblong or in-8 oblong. Nice engraved headers (flight in Egypt, Christ on the cross, etc). Signatures of the representatives of the recipients of the order: Joseph Amir for the account of Jean-Baptiste Valbonnet, Bourguignon & Cie for the account of Mr. Joseph Bourguignon of Marseille, Sarmet & Cie for the account of Messrs Boyetet and Agnet of Marseille, Nicolas Eypanet & Cie for the account of Messrs Mathieu and Joseph Hermitte of Marseille, etc. - 10 printed lists of "General price-current of goods" noted by the commercial brokers.
