Attribué à Etienne-Simon Martin. (? - 1770) - Lot 291
Attribué à Etienne-Simon Martin. (? - 1770) Pair of cardboard cups covered with red lacquer, rich chased and gilded bronze mounts. About 1740 - 1750. H.: 13 cm, L. : 17,5 cm (missing a screw) Note: European painters and varnishers have developed techniques to imitate different types of lacquers but also materials. The shape and the color of this pair of cups make us think they are Canton lacquer cups, but they were made in Paris. They can be attributed to Etienne-Simon Martin, whose inventory counted, in 1770, thirty-eight cardboard vases, in polished porfire, or in polished red lacquer. See a pair of blue lacquer vases in the Camondo Museum (inv. CAM 82.1 and 2) .
