Exceptional sundial of cubic shape with downturned angles in brass. This polyhedron bearing on each of its five faces the different time scales thus composed: -A vertical dial of MERIDIONAL orientation with a sun engraved in the center (missing the gnomon). - A vertical dial with the mention SEPTENTRIONAL. It is engraved, at the bottom, with the signature (missing the lead and the gnomon). -A vertical dial with the mention ORIENTAL, engraved with the signs of the zodiac for the seasons. - A vertical dial with the mention OCCIDENTAL engraved with the signs of the zodiac for the seasons. - A horizontal dial engraved with a sun with the mention for 49 degrees (gnomon to be reattached). At the corners, stylized fleurons in triangle. Signed Pierre Sevin in Paris and dated 1664 on the northern dial. H. : 17cm ; L. : 13.1cm, l. :13.1cm (Small accidents and missing, the foot to be straightened). Provenance : Family from the East of France, by descent. Notes: Only one other example of a polyhedral dial with the arms of the Grande Mademoiselle is known, formerly in the collections of Nicolas Landau and now preserved in the Louvre Museum. To our knowledge, this dial is the only one known to be kept in private hands.
