Altar front in rare tulle embroidered with straw, 19th centu - Lot 249
Altar front in rare tulle embroidered with straw, 19th century. In cotton tulle embroidered with golden straw in imitation of the metallic flat wire of a decoration : undulating frieze of leaflets in border, bouquets of ears of wheat the stems embroidered with golden thread, and floating flowers between a sowing of star-shaped flowers and small leaves embroidered in straw. Hemmed with a mechanical lace of the blonde type. Dim. 2,15 m x 65 cm. (good general condition, stains with rare very small holes in the tulle, gold thread floating in places) Straw was an advantageous replacement for metallic flat thread often covered with gold and much more expensive to produce. Straw also had the advantage of being lighter than metal and thus less damaging to the tulle over time
