Cartobiorama or Portable Transparent Theater Alphonse GIROUX, Paris circa 1825/1830 "Filled with colored pictures or spare sets of thirty mechanical figures in cardboard and enriched with a volume containing 10 pieces of Vaudeville Comedy put within the reach of children. The whole folds up and is enclosed in a light portfolio." A set of cardboard cut-out shadow puppets in the style of Seraphim's puppet shows. Armed with wire for manipulation, the characters are articulated. Formerly arranged in binders by title, the many characters are to be grouped together to allow them to exchange again in Vaudeville playlets, procured by the merchant Giroux, who specialized in princely gifts.
