Blanchard's Balloon Flight, circa 1783 Folded fan, the double sheet of engraved paper enhanced with gouache, celebrating the flight of Blanchard's flying machine on the Champde- Mars in Paris on March 2, 1783. The facade of the École Militaire is depicted at left. The Parisians came to attend the show, some with a telescope. On both sides, cartels sing the praises of "La phisico mécanique" and of the king Louis XVI: "That our century is flourishing/ Vive la Phisique/It is not astonishing, /It is the effect of the movement, /Of the Méchanique, /Of a King doing well (sic)".
