The Lace Seller, ca. 1720 - Lot 86
The Lace Seller, ca. 1720 Folded fan, the leaf in skin, mounted in English and painted with gouache of a comic spring interior scene, in the taste of the British artist Hogarth (1697-1764). An elegant woman wearing a lace bonnet holds her fan close to her face and looks towards a screen. Behind her is a knight brandishing a sword and climbing on a chair to observe her. He is probably jealous of a lace salesman who is offering entredeux and ribbons. Her "tile" placed on her knees, a lacemaker observes the scene with a reproachful look. Painted reverse of two dogs fighting, while a lover holds them in leash. A flag struck with a heart as a standard. Mounting in cut, engraved and colored ivory* with mother-of-pearl applications. H.t. 27 cm-H.f. 13,5 cm (accidents, lacks, restorations)
