Dido and the foundation of Carthage, ca. 1720-1730 Folded fan, the skin sheet lined with paper and painted with gouache of Queen Dido in her palace. Architects in front of her set compasses, plumb line and square to present her with the plans of a palace garden. Behind her, her servants provide shade or bring her precious vases and silks. Painted reverse side of a soldier listening to a musician. Mounting alternating strands of brown tortoiseshell** and white mother-of-pearl. The mother-of-pearl strands are cut and engraved with a man and a woman in alternation. The tortoiseshell** strands are decorated with military or musical trophies in gold piqué. The plumes present a very rich and fine decoration in gold piqué: a quiver crossed with a torch is surmounted by a crown of laurels, a gun and a cuirass dominated by a helmet and flags. H.t. 29,5 cm-H.f. 18 cm (accidents, important restorations). Sold with a frame.
