Jean-Baptiste CARPEAUX ( 1827 - 1875) Paul and Virginia. Circa 1862. Plaster sketch. Metal stamp Propriété Carpeaux and a label 74. (broken neck and glued back together, small accidents). H.: 38.5 cm. A plaster sketch is kept at the Musée d'Orsay (inv. no. RF2933), a terracotta version at the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Valenciennes and a plaster kept at the Petit Palais (inv. no. PPS1567) A similar copy in the Fabius Frères collection, 26 and 27 October 2011, lot 40. It rests on a base of red Morello cherry marble.
