Exceptional circular chiffonnière salon table, it opens with - Lot 164
Exceptional circular chiffonnière salon table, it opens with a drawer on the front and presents a rich ornamentation of chiselled and gilded bronze such as: openwork galleries, ropes, water leaf frames, laurel leaf rosettes, fleuron rings, ribboned scraps, acanthus leaves and leafy clogs. It rests on a tripod base composed of cut-sided uprights, joined by a crotch shelf decorated with inlaid marquetry with a V under a crown, a figure of Victoria Princess of England, framed by a rose and a cornflower branch and extended by small arched feet. Very fine marquetry decoration with scraps of holly leaves or juniper branches. Based on a model by Martin Carlin (1730 - 1785) issued by the Merchant Merchant Dominique Daguerre for the Duchess of Mazarin in 1779 (decorated with a plaque from Sèvres). Preserved in the J.Paul Getty Museum. (Small accidents and missing parts, the jasper top fractured) H.: 70,5 cm, D.: 37 cm. Our table was ordered between 1841 and 1858 for Victoria, Royal Princess of Great Britain (1840 - 1901), then Empress of Germany and Queen of Prussia as wife of Emperor Frederick III. She was the eldest of Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom, and was created Princess Royal in 1841. She was the mother of Kaiser Wilhelm II, Emperor of Germany. This monogram will be that of the Royal Princess until her marriage in 1858.
