ÉCOLE FRANÇAISE DU XIXe SIÈCLE, ATTRIBUÉE À JEAN-MARIUS FOUQUE (1822-1880). Portrait of the young Duke of Bordeaux (1820-1883). Oil on canvas signed lower left "Fouque", preserved in its period giltwood frame. Slight blistering on the canvas, but good general condition. Sight: H.: 31 cm - W.: 23.5 cm. Frame: H.: 47 cm - W.: 39 cm. 1 History: the first version of this representation of the young Duke of Bordeaux is attributed to Pierre-Henri Grevedon (1788-1860), see in the collections of the Musée des Arts Décoratifs de Bordeaux (inv.: 58.I.5492), it was executed in Prague in September 1833 and was then the subject of numerous revivals in France and England, like the work we present. In this portrait the prince wears a blue velvet frock coat and a shirt topped with a "Henri IV" strawberry, as he was receiving the young French legitimists who had come to celebrate his coming of age at Butschirad Castle, the summer residence of the Bohemian kings, near Prague, which was made available to the French royal family on 29 September 1833. He also wears the cord and the plaque of the Order of the Holy Spirit.
