SERVICE DU VICOMTE DE CHATEAUBRIAND, OFFERED BY KING LOUIS XVIII.
MANUFACTURE ROYALE, SÈVRES, 1823.
Hard porcelain dinner plate, from the so-called Chateaubriand Service, decorated in the center with a polychrome painted scene representing a bouquet of flowers on a background of a brown and gold trellis in imitation of a basket. The border (the wing) with blue background is enhanced with gold in imitation of lapis lazuli between two gold fillets.
Slight wear and tear, but very good condition.
Blue printed mark : L. (Louis XVIII), Sèvres, (18)23.
Blue mark of the painter : C.D. : Jean-François (aîné) Desnoyers-Chaponnet, active from 1810 to 1828.
Gold gilder's mark dated April 24 (18)23.
Green mark: Feb. 9, 19.
Diameter: 24 cm.
History: this service, more often called "Lapis corbeille de fleurs", appears in the registers of the Sèvres factory in 1819. One year later, the sales register records a delivery of 99 plates, 10 bowls, 2 ice buckets, 4 compote dishes, 2 sugar bowls with trays, and 2 Jasmine baskets. Other pieces of this service were successively completed on April 15, 1822, May 2, 1822 and August 21, 1823 for Viscount de Chateaubriand, then French ambassador to England. This order was a personal gift from King Louis XVIII.
