SERVICE OF THE ARCHDUKE FERDINAND OF AUSTRIA. ROYAL MANUFACT - Lot 104
SERVICE OF THE ARCHDUKE FERDINAND OF AUSTRIA. ROYAL MANUFACTURE, SÈVRES, late 18th century. A soft-paste porcelain glass cooler based on the service given by King Louis XVI to his brother-in-law Archduke Ferdinand of Austria. Polychrome decoration of shingles and roses in two oval medallions surrounded by gold leafy garlands on a celestial blue background. The lower part is decorated with a row of pearls on a purple braid background. The grips are decorated with leaves enhanced with gold. This model was probably sold in white by the factory at the end of the 18th century and overdecorated thereafter, probably to complete the initial service executed in 1785 by Mme Bouillat (1777-1798) and Guillaume Noël (1755-1804). Slight wear from the time, but good general condition. H. : 10,5 cm - Diam. : 12 cm. History : the original model of this service intended for the royal court of Milan, included 288 pieces and was paid to the Manufacture of Sevres the sum of 24000 pounds. This set was dispersed at the end of the 19th century. Archduke Ferdinand of Austria (1754-1806), brother of Queen Marie-Antoinette, was appointed by their mother, Empress Maria Theresa of Austria, as governor of Lombardy. It was in this context that in 1786 he and his wife made a semi-official visit to Versailles under the name of the Count and Countess of Nellembourg. And it was on this occasion that King Louis XVI offered his brother-in-law the service with a celestial blue background, daisies, shingles and roses.
