L'Espérance, ca. 1880 Folded fan, the grey silk sheet painted in grisaille with bouquets of roses. In the centre, two women sit on a sea anchor, a symbol of hope. In the background, a dark ship. Reverse side painted with scrolls and flowers. Black mother-of-pearl mounting known as Tahitian. H.t. 23 cm-H.f. 13,4 cm (wear to the folds, small accidents and restoration to the reverse) Provenance: Sothebys sale, 17 December 2008, "Property from Royal and noble families".
