Venus at the Forges of Vulcan, circa 1700 - Lot 52
Venus at the Forges of Vulcan, circa 1700 Skin fan leaf, painted with gouache. On a black background, taken from the composition "Venus at the forges of Lemnos" by Antoine Coypel (1661-1722). Vulcan forges the arrows that will arm Aeneas. Venus cools them before entrusting them to Love whose arrow pierces Aeneas' armour to touch his heart. Black and silver border (oxidised). Reverse side painted on a black background with a cast of cut flowers including roses, tulips and mimosa. H.f. 17,4 cm L. 50,5 cm (small missing parts)
