The play takes place in Moscow in June 1547. It features Joanna
Vasilyevich, later to be called Ivan the Terrible, around whom various historical figures, the boyars Kleshnin, Adashev, Zashariyne, Prince Tiemkin, the Metropolitan, Anastasia the wife of the Tsar, Silvestre (the priest and spiritual mentor of Ivan the Terrible), and the Tsar's jester, evolve. The play begins with a description of the loneliness and difficulties with which the Tsar grows up. He loses both his parents when he is young and knows neither love nor family affection. He is brought up by boyars in a cruelty he will not forgive. He will never forget his unhappy childhood. At the age of thirteen, Ivan Vassilyevich decides to firmly establish his power. Shuiysky. After this return to the past, the author takes us back to 1547 when the Tsar faces painful reflections, lost by the duality of his being. He is a brilliant and good-natured man, but also brutal and bloodthirsty.
The Duke of Leuchtenberg then describes a succession of events. In January, Joanna Vassilyevich accedes to the throne under the name of Ivan IV.
His marriage six months later is followed by a terrible fire that destroys a third of the city of Moscow. Then a revolt broke out in the capital against the Tsar's maternal family, the Ylinskys. The fire and the riots are perceived by the young sovereign as a divine punishment.
