*PAIR OF GILT BRONZE DECORATIVE ELEMENTS. FROM THE FURNITURE - Lot 242
*PAIR OF GILT BRONZE DECORATIVE ELEMENTS. FROM THE FURNITURE OF THE DUC D'ORLÉANS. Decorated with an oval medallion with the monogram FPO (Ferdinand-Philippe d'Orléans), under the crown of the Prince of France carried by two angels on a draped background held by a finely chiselled garland of flowers. These decorative elements, mounted late in chenets, most certainly come from the libraries of the royal prince in the Tuileries, which are known from descriptions to have possessed this type of ornament. A groove can be seen at the back, probably corresponding to the positioning of these cartouches. The fixings on the irons correspond to the original holes used to fix them to a piece of furniture. They were later mounted in a chenet, on a metal base. French work, circa 1840. Time wear to the gilding, but good general condition. H.: 19 cm - W.: 27 cm - D.: 51 cm. Provenance: former collection of Prince Ferdinand-Philippe d'Orléans, Duke of Orléans, eldest son of King Louis-Philippe (1810-1842). The Duc d'Orléans had very rich furnishings for his apartments in the Tuileries palace, as in the Marsan pavilion. These decorative elements can be attributed to Jean-Baptiste Jules Klagmann (1810-1867). We know that the Duke of Orléans regularly asked the sculptor Jean-Baptiste Klagmann for prestigious commissions. We also note that the lower part of the cupboards made by Alexandre Louis Bellangé for the dining room of the Duke of Orléans in the Tuileries are decorated with similar cartouches on the façade.
