FERDINAND-PHILIPPE, Duke of Orleans (1810-1842). - Lot 124
FERDINAND-PHILIPPE, Duke of Orleans (1810-1842). Round biscuit medallion, representing the profile of the prince with his head turned to the left, on a sky blue Wedgwood-style background, surrounded by the inscription "F. PH. L. Duc d'Orléans Prince Royal 1810" preserved under curved glass in a gilded bronze frame decorated with a chiseled frieze of palmettes. Weathered, but good condition. French work, Manufacture de Sèvres, 1837-1839. Diameter: 12 cm. See illustration on page 72. Provenance: former collection of Princess Isabelle d'Orléans-Bragance, Countess of Paris (1911-2003), from her Parisian residence. History: although this medallion from a series representing the Orléans family profiles is not signed, it is the work of Jean-Jacques Barre (1793-1855), known as Barre père. He collaborated extensively on the medallion iconographic history of the reign of Louis-Philippe and was appointed general engraver of medals at the Monnaie de Paris in 1842. It was not until 1837 that "cut-out medallions" and "cameos" moulded and fashioned by Frédéric Marchand and Charles Fischbag began to appear in the sales shop of the Sèvres manufactory (Register Va' 32 fol. 168 sq. and 218 sq.). The series was completed in 1839 with the development of moulds for the Duke and Duchess of Orléans (Register Va' 34 fol. 98 sq.).
