French Victory, circa 1780 - Lot 113
French Victory, circa 1780 Folded fan, the silk satin sheet painted in gouache with a garland of flowers outlined in gold chain stitch framing three views of naval battles. At right, English soldiers on the deck of a ship off an island. At left, soldiers on a sinking ship. In the center, soldiers of the King of France in blue uniforms are fighting against English soldiers in red uniforms. Their ships are facing each other and one is firing cannonballs. In the background, a fortress on a rocky promontory is defended by soldiers, while ships cruise offshore. This victory is probably related to the American War of Independence, perhaps the capture of Grenada in the West Indies in 1779? The reverse side is painted with flowers. Ivory mounting with decoration in harmony with the painted leaf of two ships sailing on the waves, on either side of a lion lying on the barrels of a cannon. In the center, the arms of France with golden fleurs-de-lis are flanked by flags, and surmounted by the letters "LV" (?), in a radiant sun. The plumes are pierced, sculpted, gilded and decorated with miniatures, one on the marine theme. H.t. 28 cm - H.f. 12,7 cm (wear) In a case covered with paper in imitation of shagreen. 18th century Provenance : label with the reference 1829 of the former collection Henry-René d'Allemagne (1863-1950).
