The memorable judgment of Sancho Pança, circa 1740-1750 - Lot 113
The memorable judgment of Sancho Pança, circa 1740-1750 Folded fan, the sheet of skin, lined with paper, and painted in gouache after the work of C.-A. Coypel (1724), inspired by Cervantes' "Don Quixote". Newly established as governor of the island of Barataria, Sancho Pança, Don Quixote's faithful valet thrones in majesty, to deliver three judgements. The subject of the sheet illustrates the second judgment, between two old men (volume 4 chapter 45). In front of him, an old man crawls to pick up gold coins that spring from the cane in which they had hidden them. An ancient handwritten inscription recalls the subject on the left: "Memorable Jugemens (sic) by Sacho Pancha (sic)". Reverse side painted with a gallant paying his respects. Ivory frame* pierced, carved, engraved and enhanced in color of a young woman at her toilette. Metallic belly. H.t. 29,5 cm - H.f. 14 cm (wear, restorations) N.B.: the engravings after Coypel were also used as models for the curtain woven in the 18th century by the Gobelins manufactory after the very fashionable novel by Cervantes.
